Craving a mini escape right in the heart of the city? Look no further than Kralingse Plas and Kralingse Bos—a beautiful green oasis where you can play, cycle, swim, and explore to your heart’s content. With so much to do, you could easily spend an entire day here!

Kick things off at the deer park, where friendly goats and deer eagerly wait for a handful of treats. Need a snack yourself? The Pancake House nearby is the perfect stop for a towering stack of Dutch pancakes, drizzled with syrup and dusted with powdered sugar.

On the far side of the Plas, a charming petting zoo awaits—free for everyone to visit. If the sun is shining, cool off at the toddler-friendly wading pool right next door, also free of charge. Our little ones couldn’t get enough of splashing around, while the small sandy beach nearby is perfect for building sandcastles and dipping your toes in the water.

Love staying active? The scenic walking and cycling trails along the lake make for a perfect outing. But if you’re up for something truly special, don’t miss a visit to one of the area’s historic working windmills. Watching spices being freshly ground, climbing up for a spectacular view, and bringing home a jar of speculaas spice mix made for the perfect end to an unforgettable day!

Travel the world without ever leaving Rotterdam! At the Wereldmuseum, you’ll journey through cultures from across the globe. We loved visiting even before having kids, but with a family, it’s an even more magical experience!

That’s thanks to Superstraat, a vibrant, kid-sized street where little adventurers can explore different cultures through play. They can shop for groceries at Aga’s toko, learn an energetic dance from Rodney, or join Winston’s Party Kitchen to cook up delicious dishes from around the world. No dusty display cases here—everything is hands-on, interactive, and full of fun!

The museum itself is set in a breathtaking historic building right on the Maas River, just a short stroll from the Erasmus Bridge—a perfect spot for a post-visit walk by the water. Keep in mind that Superstraat isn’t open every day, so be sure to check ahead before you go. In our experience, it’s a fantastic outing for kids aged 2 and up!

The amazing natural playground—with plenty of water fun! It’s a favorite for kids of all ages. We even brought our babies here to splash in the shallow areas. For older kids, there are deeper sections and a rope swing for daring water crossings!

A museum visit with kids? While art museums might not always seem like the most kid-friendly places, the Depot Boijmans Van Beuningen is anything but ordinary. This sleek, mirrored building is impressive on its own—it’s practically a piece of art in itself! Since opening its doors in 2021, it has offered a fascinating behind-the-scenes look at an extraordinary art collection.

Unlike traditional museums where artworks are neatly hung on walls, here you’ll find them stored in enormous cabinets and display cases. The museum features a vast interior, complete with towering staircases and elevators, where art is displayed at various heights, almost floating in the space. This unique setup makes it even more exciting to explore together: what quirky, funny, or awe-inspiring pieces can you spot among the tens of thousands of works?

When I visited with my toddler, she was mesmerized by the paintings and sculptures we looked at together. However, it’s probably even more engaging for older kids, who will ask all kinds of questions and delight in choosing their favorite pieces. The depot is a one-of-a-kind experience and a tranquil space to enjoy art and discover new things together. And don’t miss the rooftop terrace for a breathtaking view of Rotterdam!

#28 Eiland van Brienenoord

A hidden slice of nature in the heart of Rotterdam, Eiland van Brienenoord is a little-known spot that even many locals are unaware of, which is exactly what makes it so special. Tucked beneath the Brienenoord Bridge, this island feels like a mini wilderness, with winding trails, charming allotment gardens, and a herd of Highland Cattle grazing freely.

They can spot the large, reddish-brown cattle (but don’t get too close!), climb over fallen trees, and search for interesting stones along the shores of the River Maas.
