Goblin Slayer -Another Adventurer- Nightmare Feast from Bushiroad Games and Red Art Games is the first video game adaptation of the anime. Goblin Slayer got started as a dark fantasy light novel back in 2016. This was followed by a manga adaptation in Monthly Big Gamgan, as well as CD audio dramas. Then, in 2018, the Goblin Slayer anime began. In 2020, we also got a Goblin Slayer film titled Goblin Slayer: Goblin’s Crown. Series’ creator Kumo Kagyu is behind this new game’s original concept, and the designs for the main characters are from Noboru Kannatsuki, who also worked on the Goblin Slayer anime.
In Goblin Slayer -Another Adventurer- Nightmare Feast, you’ll be taking on the role of a young heroine who finds herself as the new leader of a local Adventurers’ Guild after the untimely death of her father, who was the former Guild Master. While preparing for this new task, she locates a peculiar artifact in her father’s study that can allegedly bring back the dead! This, unfortunately, sets in motion a series of events that will lead to her and her companions having to defend said artifact from evil forces. As you can tell from the screens and trailer in this Goblin Slayer -Another Adventurer- Nightmare Feast, this new release is of the tactical RPG variety!
The game can be played in one of two difficulty settings: Story and Adventure. Story will allow you to focus on the story, with battles that will be easier to complete since the strength of enemies will be sligthly lowered. Playing in the Adventure difficulty setting will have you playing Goblin Slayer -Another Adventurer- Nightmare Feast at the original challenge level, aimed at those of you with some experience with the genre. Battles will definitely not be a walk in the park, so be ready!
After the Guild Master hears that a group of goblins and some other monsters have been spotted near town, close to a castle that, legend has it, was the home of a vampire, she decides to set out on a scout mission to investigate since the only other adventurer in the guild – her childhood friend, Squire – is on an important quest carrying potatoes for a woman who hurt her back. When she’s close to the castle, she realizes she’s quickly outnumbered by two groups of goblins, with one of them catching her off-guard. Her only option is to slay one of the goblins to open up a path toward the castle, to which she escapes. Does she find the vampire of legend in there? Yes, but it’s not what you expect!
While the game is definitely story-heavy, there’s also the tactical RPG side of the equation for you to consider. Battles will take place on a map with a grid-based movement system. Turns will be split between a player phase – during which all allied units can act – and an enemy phase for your opponents. For each battle, you’ll have to work on completing the corresponding win conditions.
During the player phase, you’ll be selecting the actions for each adventurer in your party. The good news is that your party members can move or act in any order that you decide without one action canceling the other one. Your party members will each have their own movement range and limits for climbing and will attack with their equipped weapons or will use magic spells, if available. As expected, someone who is a Priest will favor healing spells. Arts will use AP, and magic will require MP. You can also decide to use an item from your inventory.
Once in combat, you’ll control a cursor around the screen by using the left analog stick or the D-Pad so that you can choose which party member you’ll be taking over. You can then review its movement range, and if it has any Arts or magic that could be useful for the current scenario. For example, the Guild Master will have Dragon Tail as one of her Arts. By activating it, she’ll receive a boost to her damage and critical rate as she lands the strike. The Blood Princess – that would be the aforementioned vampire – will have a pair of spells for you to use: Vital Drain and Counter Magic. Vital Drain is a dark-type spell that can target a single opponent. As for Counter Magic, it will boost the magic defense of a single target.
Sometimes, there will be special in-battle effects that can be activated if the conditions are met. These include negating debuffs or creating a more advantageous situation for you. This will be decided by a dice roll that will need to end up in your favor. You also have the option of saving some effects for later instead of having them activate right away. As the Guild Master gains more experience points and levels up, you’ll gain access to new potential effects, lower thresholds for subsequent successful dice rolls, increased limits for usage, and increased slots for registering effects. A successful dice roll can turn the tide of battle!
